Quartzelec, a leading international electrical engineering group, has just acquired new workshop premises in Grimsby to which it will re-locate from its existing site in the town - enabling it to better meet the needs of its growing customer base, when it comes to providing rewinds, repairs and services for low voltage and medium voltage electrical motors and generators.
Previously operated by a competitor, the building had stood empty for the past five months but following the purchase of the 66 year lease, is currently being re-decorated and refitted. The site should be fully operational by early October. Currently employing 13 staff, Quartzelec is actively looking to recruiting additional personnel with motor and pump experience.
Quartzelec continues to invest heavily in its expansion and in 2012 opened a new multi-million pound HQ and workshop facility in Rugby. It also has sizeable operations that focus on motor and generator repairs in Sheffield, Swansea and Aberdeen plus various international facilities.
A key factor in the acquisition of the new Grimsby workshop are the two, 6.3 tonne overhead cranes which means Quartzelec can more easily work on larger electrical motors, up to 12.6T. Other key facilities include a large burn out oven and a large bake off oven; an electronic winding machine; plus a vertical and a separate horizontal head cutter. There is a separate winding area for everyday repairs as well as a dedicated clean room which means that specialist windings can be carried out for clients with specific needs, such as the MOD.
“This is a fantastic addition to our property portfolio and will enable us to further expand the services we deliver to our growing customer base,” stated Matt Brown, General Manager, commenting on the acquisition. “Quartzelec continues to invest in the future of heavy electrical engineering in the Humber region and in the skilled people it needs to deliver our expanding order book."
Quartzelec Grimsby already provides a superior level of service for electric motor and generator rewinds and repairs and is ideally situated to deliver 24/7 support to a large portfolio of customers in the region. A leading engineering authority with state-of-the-art production facilities, Quartzelec has an annual turnover in excess of £50m and a heritage that stretches back more than 80 years with the ability to design, manufacture, repair, refurbish and rewind large, project critical motors and generators, with an extensive library of design drawings and a full design department. It also has the ability to work on any OEM-manufactured machine and/or equipment, including those built by its previous heritage companies such as AEI, BTH, Metropolitan Vickers (Met-Vik), GEC Machines, GEC Alsthom Large Machines, ALSTOM and Cegelec.
From its Grimsby location Quartzelec offers design, manufacture, maintenance, refurbishment, service solutions and spares support for LV & HV electric motors, generators, pumps, gearboxes, transformers and associated static plant to customers in industries that include petro-chemical, steel mills, power generation, utilities, defence including MOD, food processing, traction, pharmaceutical, plus quarrying and mining and are stockists and service partners of WEG, Brook & ABB machines.
