Electrical Power Engineering Apprentice (Higher)

Key Responsibilities & Accountability

By joining us, you will receive comprehensive support through a combination of structured academic study at college and hands-on experience in the workplace. You will work in close partnership with your line manager to create a Personal Development Plan that reflects your individual goals and aspirations.

Are you a technically inclined individual seeking to forge a career in engineering? Would you like to embark on a new professional journey that combines paid employment with academic study?

This programme includes hands-on experience under the guidance of professionals, as well as structured off-the-job learning aimed at achieving a Higher Technical Qualification in Engineering (Electrical and Electronic) HNC Level 4.

Upon successful completion of the qualification, you will be responsible for a range of activities, including the planning, management, control, construction, replacement, maintenance, and repair of assets within electricity networks. You will collaborate within engineering teams that may comprise Power Network Craftsperson’s, senior engineers, and various business specialists, including those from procurement, finance, and management sectors.

You will be accountable for the quality of your own work as well as that of other team members, ensuring that all tasks are completed safely and in alignment with stakeholder expectations regarding quality, timelines, productivity, and budgetary constraints. Additionally, you will play a vital role in maintaining the integrity and efficient operation of the network.

Qualification Level: Equivalent to a Higher National Certificate (HNC) Level 4

Typical Duration: Approximately 36 months

An Electrical Power Network Engineer possesses a comprehensive understanding of the following areas

  • Fundamental principles of electrical power
  • Three-phase systems, with a focus on harmonics, their implications, and methodologies for effective power distribution
  • Design principles related to electricity networks
  • Operations of the electricity network under both normal and fault conditions
  • Implementation of safe working systems and risk management practices, including adherence to Electricity Supply Standards and relevant regulations, encompassing environmental considerations
  • Proficiency in project management tools, techniques, and processes
  • Awareness of company engineering policies pertinent to their responsibilities
  • Problem-solving capabilities in the engineering domain
  • Insight into company business planning and resource management strategies
  • Understanding of the critical interfaces within the electricity network and the effects of these interfaces

Qualifications, Experience & Personal Attributes

Are you currently in sixth form and seeking an alternative pathway to university for a career in engineering? Perhaps you are at college aiming to advance within the engineering apprenticeship framework, or you are an employee contemplating a career transition into engineering. We are looking for individuals who are technical problem solvers and aspire for a career in power system engineering.

Candidates should typically possess two A Levels at grades A-C in mathematics and a science subject, along with a GCSE in English at grades A/B, or hold an equivalent Level 3 engineering qualification, such as a National Certificate in Engineering, or possess relevant professional experience.

Eligibility also requires candidates to be UK nationals or to have resided in the UK for at least five years, with the legal right to live and work in the UK. Additionally, a valid full UK driving license is preferred.

  • Formulating and securing consensus on project plans to execute their assigned responsibilities
  • Utilising corporate information technology systems to furnish accurate and dependable data necessary for informed business decision-making
  • Demonstrating that their professional activities contribute to the organisation’s fulfilment of regulatory incentive frameworks
  • Supplying data and insights to support strategic business planning processes in relation to their assigned responsibilities
  • Employing organisational risk assessment tools and methodologies to evaluate and forecast the reliability of engineering systems and apparatus
