Apprentice Power Network Craftsperson


We are offering an exciting opportunity for an Apprentice Power Network Craftsperson to join our team in Wrexham. This apprenticeship will equip you with the technical knowledge, practical skills and safety awareness needed to become a fully competent professional working on high-voltage (HV) electrical infrastructure.

You will support the construction, maintenance and repair of the UK’s electricity network, helping to ensure a reliable and secure power supply.

Throughout the 36‑month programme, you will gain hands-on experience across a range of HV environments while working towards recognised qualifications through structured training and block release study at UCT Manchester.

 

Key Responsibilities:

In this role, you will:

  • Install, maintain and repair HV switchgear and transformers up to 33kV
  • Carry out electrical substation wiring, including complex panel wiring
  • Assist Senior Authorised Persons with testing and commissioning of HV installations
  • Install and terminate multicore cables accurately and in line with standards
  • Install cable management systems such as trays and trunking
  • Perform ferrule identification, crimping and cable preparation
  • Provide support as a HV Cable Jointer’s Mate when required
  • Mount and install a range of electrical and mechanical components
  • Read and interpret cable block diagrams, cable schedules and termination schedules
  • Interpret schematic drawings where applicable
  • Work safely at all times in line with Health, Safety and Environmental requirements
  • Follow strict industry standards when working in HV environments

 

Your skills and experiences:

Qualifications:

  • 3–5 GCSEs (Grade A–C / Level 5 equivalent), including Maths, English and a Science subject

Experience & Attributes:

  • Strong interest in electrical engineering and power networks
  • Keen to develop practical, hands-on technical skills
  • Willingness to work across a variety of sites and environments
  • Good problem-solving and analytical ability
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical instructions
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • A proactive approach to safety and compliance
  • Ability to commit to a 36‑month apprenticeship starting September 2026
